Like a newly-minted penny, yet burnished with experience, Sanford is continuing his journey in the arts with another first – a New York theater production. With a successful history in business, the performing arts and theater, Sanford has recently optioned a new and culturally-relevant play by an important NYC playwright to be performed in New York City post-pandemic.
A Heritage In The Arts
Sanford led the Board of the largest statewide arts organization in South Dakota, The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO). He chaired their annual gala fundraiser which raised more revenue by 40% than had ever been done previously, He also co-chaired the opening of The Great Hall of the Washington Pavilion, a 1900-seat performance venue with a concert starring soloist Yo Yo Ma.
As the first elected president of the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society, he chaired their first Jazzfest that featured a Grammy-award-winning headliner, Ramsey Lewis. Jazzfest continues today as one of the largest free jazz festivals in the country with national headliners on two main stages over two days drawing over 100,000 attendees every year.
Fundraising
Sanford co-chaired the first annual gala fundraiser for a Brooklyn-based arts organization, American Opera Projects. Featuring honoree Steven Schwartz, award-winning writer of musicals such as Godspell, Pippin and Wicked, it was a great first effort.
